Truth or fact

There was much else that Jesus did; if it were written down in detail, I do not suppose the world itself would hold all the books that would be written. (John 21)

If a story about someone has no basis in historical fact, then can it possibly be true?

This is the question that I am grappling with at the moment. Sometimes my head is spinning with the myriads of opinions in the myriads times myriads of books John the Evangelist refers to. The foundations of my worldview and faith are teetering precariously.

At moments like this I close the books and put my reading glasses away. Instead I take my camera and go out, ears and eyes attuned to the sound of God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

I don’t have to walk far to put the doubts to rest.

Back home I pick up the books again, and read things through what my lens, a glass less darkly, has seen. Things about God can be known through his works.

  1. Two young people came to my door one day, their task: to educate me in the ways of our Lord, and specifically, Jesus Christ, whom, was the son of God, they informed. To which I replied: aren’t we all; children of God.

I honestly believe that there can only be one God, the fact that the Jews are still waiting for that mythical being they choose to call the Messiah is a true indication that for the best part, we have failed to grasp the true meaning of life here on earth, and fanatically, set ourselves up to worship a whole range of idols which are dependent on the many faiths and religions we follow.

To me, life is much simpler than the scriptures would have us believe. Faith Hope and Love, as you yourself has pointed out Rien, are the corner stones of, and all we really need to know about, life here on earth.

  3. Just read a Scripture quoted by Ds A Hofman….. Ecclesiastes, 3 too much studying of books wearies the body. You could well be on the right track finding God in nature.

PS I assume Ds a Hofman is ome Aart.
